Random Things

Was NBC under contract last night to show Cowboys owner Jerry Jones a gazillion times during the broadcast of the Giants and Cowboys game? I swear, there were more shots of Jones than Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips. I realize that it was the opening night of the new Cowboys Stadium, but give me a break.

Ok, so we swapped out Brighthouse cable for AT&T UVerse. I’m always hesitant about using AT&T service because I’ve had their cell phone service and DSL and they both sucked. But I was intrigued by this service which is fiber optic based. They have tiers of service like satellite, but the big selling point for me was the “whole house” DVR. We have three televisions. Living room, Florida room, master bedroom. We had one DVR with Brighthouse and it was in the living room. UVerse allows you to have one DVR, but be able to view recorded content on any other television. We got our Internet through them as well and the service has been very fast. Because everything runs through one main box, another cool feature is the ability to display photographs and stream music through the televisions. I asked the installer about video and he said it was coming. So far, I am very impressed.

Tony Romo may put up bigger numbers than Eli Manning, but which if the two would you rather have when the game is on the line? A holding penalty to start the final drive in last night’s game didn’t faze Manning. Yet Romo threw three picks, two of which were gimmes to the Giants. Terrell Owens had some fun with it.

Our church is going to be starting a series on the weekend of October 3rd that is going to incorporate the use of Twitter. This is a big step for our church and it will be interesting to see how the congregation takes to it.

As part of the life goal that I have set for myself to be able to work in the field of photography full time, I have started to immerse myself in articles, blogs, website and books regarding wedding photography. I have even contacted several wedding photographers asking if I could work as an unpaid assistant for them in order to learn more about it.

My love of photography never really extended to weddings in large part because I thought it was boring. Most standard wedding photography looks the same. It was all of these standard shots and poses. But something changed and a new style (or perhaps it was always around just not utilized all that much) of wedding photography has taken hold. It’s photojournalism style photography. Rather than your standard wedding poses, the photographer uses his camera and subjects to tell a story of that wedding day. This is much more my style. So we’ll see what happens!

I may get some grief for this, but I think the trend towards having to pay big dollars to be ‘coached’ by church leaders is getting out of hand. This service here costs nearly $5000 for 6 training sessions. This doesn’t include the cost of travel or any other expenses.

That’s a lot of money.

Trust me, I understand that Pastors and church leaders are stretched for time, have crazy schedules and do so much for nothing that there is nothing wrong with them asking at times, to compensated for their time. But I’m starting to see more and more of this. With ‘this’ being these kind of classes or training courses or conferences that are costing more and more money.

I love Mark Batterson. I read his blog and have watched him preach. But in all honesty, just exactly what is it somebody is going to get in 36 hours and at a cost of nearly $5000? At the very least, why not spell out for those who might want to sigh up, why it’s so expensive and what are the actual costs?

I don’t know. Maybe I am being too hasty in my thoughts or comments?

What do you think?

I tried to leave my tweet comment about it open ended, but I do agree with you on this thing. I guess if I had the ability to charge people to coach them then it would be harder to say it, but I have to think that it all just becomes a money pit.

You'll get a dose of good grief from me on the $5,000 consulting price. As in GOOD GRIEF!!! Props for being bold about that! It's a specific reason why I've started the DigitalDisciples.net local gathering network. Thanks for the post!

My question about the coaching cost is are we the foolish ones that pay for it? I have two friends who are paying for coaching. They could care less how much it cost because they are not paying for it, the church is. Meanwhile you got guys like me who are unemployed and probably need the coaching the most getting nothing because we have no money.
I think we are feeding the system to be honest. I guess what I am saying is that people are willing to pay then it is always going to be there.
